Vinod Khanna was born on 6 October 1946 in Peshawar in British India, now in Pakistan. His father’s name was Kishanchand Khanna and mother’s name was Kamal Khanna.

His father was a very large businessman, whose business was spread in the textile, dye, and chemical markets. India was partitioned shortly after his birth and his father moved to Mumbai with his entire family.

He was educated at St. Mary’s School in Mumbai. In this school, he studied up to another class. After this, his father got him admitted to St. Xavier High School in Delhi. Shortly after this, his entire family shifted to Delhi.

After Saint Xavier’s school, he studied at Delhi Public School, located in Delhi. In the year 1960, his entire family returned to Mumbai. This time Vinod’s education was studied at Barnes School in Nashik. After high school, he completed his graduation in commerce from Sydenham College in Mumbai. During his studies, he saw films like Solvasaal and Mughal-e-Azam and was disappointed that this was his last point.

FAMILY

He was married to Gitanjali in the year 1971. They had two children from Gitanjali, named Akshaye Khanna and Rahul Khanna. Only after this he also started to get interested in spirituality. He became attached to Osho Rajneesh and while working in Osho’s ashram located in America, started working as a gardener for Rajneesh.

Due to not staying in India for a long time, their marital relationship started cracking and in 1985 this relationship broke up forever. He married Kavita in 1990, five years after the breakup of this marriage. He also had two children from the poem, whose names are Sakshi and Shraddha.

He was very attractive in his youth. His height was also fine. So very soon they started getting work. He made his film debut with Sunil Dutt’s ‘Man Ke Meet’ directed by Adurthi Subba Rao.

In this film, he was given the role of Villan and Som Dutt as the protagonist. The film was a remake of a Tamil film Kumari Pain. Along with this, he played a negative character in many such films.

In the films released between 1968 and 1971, he made his place in the industry by playing negative characters in ‘Purab and Paschim’, ‘Sachajhuta, ‘On Milo Sajna’, ‘Mastana’, ‘Mera Gaon Mera Desh‘ etc.

He is one of the very few actors who started his career with the character of a Villain, and later became a hero. However, this is very difficult in the film industry. He got the opportunity to act in the lead role in the 1971 film Hum, Tum Aur Woh.

In this cinema, he appeared with Bharti Vishnuvardhan. This year he was also seen in Gulzar Saheb’s film Mere Apne. This film was a remake of a Bengali film ‘Apanjan’. After this, in 1973, he was again seen in the film ‘Sudden’ written and directed by Gulzar. The film was well-received by people and film critics.

In the film Hum, Tum Aur Woh, the romantic form of he was liked by the people and after that, this form was seen in many films. During the years 1973 to 1982, he played the role of solo hero in many films.

These films include Farebi, Khaidi, Zalim, etc. These films established their distinct identity among the people. While doing these films, actresses like Moushumi Chatterjee, Leena Chandavarkar, Vidya Singh were seen working with them.

After these films, many blockbuster films also appeared in his account. These films included traitor, Aap ki khatir, main tulsi tere aangan ki, Khoon ki Khoon, hobby, Daulat, etc.

After this, he got opportunities to do many romantic characters as well, but most of the time he used to get an action thriller only. In romantic films, he got crime and moonlight films during this time. During the nineties, he was seen as the emperor of Muqaddar, CID, Jai, but more.

Many multi-star action films were being made at this time. In such films, it was mandatory to have him. Those films were the Mahasangram, Kshatriyas, Dharmatma, Ekka Raja Rani, Ina Mica Deka, etc.

POLITICAL CAREER

In 1997, he turned to politics. This year, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and joined active politics. Two years after this, in 1999, he contested for the party from Gurdaspur in Punjab and registered his victory in this seat.

He later won re-election from this seat. In 2002, he became the Minister of Union Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Government of India. Very soon after six months, he reached the Ministry of External Affairs.

Although he lost to Gurdaspur in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, he again won from his seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

DEATH

He was battling cancer in his last time. He was admitted to Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Center. Although early in the year 2017, there was news of his recovery, the disease continued to increase.
